Hovercraft operation conditions:
Year-round operation at outdoor temperature from -25°C to +40°C and maximum wind speed of 15 m/sec.
The hovercraft can operate on different kinds of surface: water, sand, grass, shoal, marsh land, ice (thin ice and ice clearing), snow, rough terrain... The time of continuous motion on slough ice and slush should be limited to prevent possible icing at temperatures from 0°C to -9°C. The hovercraft can climb a slope up to 30° with acceleration as well as sloping banks, rills and shoals.

HOVERCRAFT DESCRIPTION Hull:
The hull of hovercraft is made of composite materials by contact moulding with a varying thickness to provide maximum durability at minimum weight. The material is resistant to mechanical impact and chemicals (oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid etc.). Various foam fillers are used to increase stiffness of vibration and sound insulation. The hull has antiskid coating where it is needed. The hovercraft is equipped with four hoisting rings for handling, designed for hovercraft weight with full fuel tanks.

Cabin:
The cabin is also made of composite materials. It has a laminated windshield (triplex). Side windows are made of tempered impact-proof glass. Large glass area provides maximum panorama view. There are two windshield wipers with washer sprayers provided. The wipers have interval (cyclic) mode. The windshield is electrically heated.

The cabin has two lifting doors with windows and lock. Two big doors are top-hinged and open like a “gull wing”. Opened doors can be fixed in their upper position providing easy access for passengers and crew. The light sliding doors are also possible.
The hovercraft is fitted with emergency exit hatch in the rear or on the top of the cabin. Headlight detector with remote control (IR radio console or joystick from dash panel) and navigational lights are installed on the cabin roof or in the aerodynamic ring.
Inside the cabin there are 4 separate seats. Hovercraft is fitted with efficient heating facilities for windshield and cabin as a whole. It provides enough heating and ventilation of the cabin at high and low values of outdoor temperature. Pilot’s seat is situated in the center.

The control zone includes steering column, separate levers for thrust engine and lifting and a full set of measuring devices. There are LED lamps with discrete white or red light for map reading in the cabin.

HOVERCRAFT DESCRIPTION Flexible Skirt:

The flexible skirt is two-level, of classic type:
first level – solid
second level – removable elements
The flexible skirt itself is made of dense material: nylon with neoprene coating, specially designed for hovercrafts by Dupont Corporation (USA).

The skirt itself is made of dense air tight fabric. Main characteristics of the fabric:

  • Abrasion resistance (the lowest coefficient of friction)
  • High flexibility and elasticity even at low temperatures (to -35 °C)
  • Ultraviolet radiation resistance
  • Oil products resistance

Power plant:
Thrust and lift systems of the hovercraft are separate, which has a positive effect on running characteristics of the lift system. The greater part of the lifting air is supplied to the front of the cushion system for higher efficiency when the craft is hovering at high speed over stormy water. In addition, a lift fan is located in such a way that air is injected directly into the lift system thus reducing the losses in the ducts and bends.

The hovercraft is equipped with two four-stroke engines. Each of them has electric starter.
The first engine – axial lift fan drive:
18 h.p., four-stroke, with air cooling (two cylinders, carburetor).
The second – thrust fan drive:
35 h.p., four-stroke, with air cooling (two cylinders, carburetor).
Fuel system is equipped with electric fuel pump. Capacity of a fuel tank is 40 liters.

Easy separate control of engines mode allows:

  • To use the lift system without starting thrust engine
  • To achieve full thrust keeping the craft afloat without lifting on the cushion.

The separate location of the thrust and lift systems also improves hovercraft balance. Various loads should be located as close to the pressure center of the lift system as possible to minimize their effect on the hovercraft balance. A balanced hovercraft is more controllable and requires less power for thrust, which significantly increases engine life and reduces fuel consumption.
Two-engine scheme allows us to use a thrust engine of less power; therefore both engines can be smaller, lighter and more economical than in one-engine scheme. Less weight in its turn demands less power.

HOVERCRAFT DESCRIPTION Transmission:
PRSU (Propeller Speed Reduction Unit) (Italia) is used to transmit power of thrust engine providing optimal rpm of thrust engine. Lift fan is driven directly by crankshaft of a separate engine.

Fan:
Lift fan (for cushion creation): 9 blades – diameter of 710 mm (Denmark).
Thrust fan (for thrust creation): 6 blades – diameter of 1200 mm (Denmark).

Material of the blades:
Glass Reinforced polyamide
At customer wish – composite (carbon) with stainless steel caps

Electrical system:
The craft is equipped with:

  • 12V power supply system
  • 45 A/hour battery
  • Ignition lock and start buttons
  • Fuses
  • Two cigarette lighter sockets for connection of additional equipment and devices

Fire prevention:
Fire detector is installed in the engine compartment and connected to alarm on the control panel. Engine compartment is equipped with fixed carbon dioxide fire extinguishers that can be activated from control position. Additional portable CO2 extinguishers are installed inside the cabin. Areas in the engine compartment exposed to heat are protected with stainless steel thermal shields. Exhaust system is also protected to reduce heat radiation.

Rescue and emergency equipment:
Life jackets on the number of passenger seats, heaving line with a light buoy are included.

Stability of the hovercraft:
In any operational case of loading the hovercraft meets stability requirements of the Russian River Register applied to hovercrafts and small vessels.

HOVERCRAFT DESCRIPTION Amphibious qualities:
Amphibious qualities of the hovercraft are provided by lifting the hull off the surface due to air cushion created and kept under the hull by the skirt. The height depends upon the engines rpm speed and trim angle. Maximum air cushion height is about 0,4 m.
The skirt is a fully pressurized tapered bag and finger system. The bag pressure is higher than the cushion pressure and is regulated by control holes in the inner membrane of the bag. This system is well proven to be the most stable and dynamically efficient skirt system available for amphibious hovercrafts today. This system is applied exclusively on military and big commercial hovercrafts.

Reliability:
The construction units were designed taking into account years of successful experience in operation of various hovercraft models and building the previous models – Christy 255, Christy 6132, Christy 6143.
The hovercraft is made of high quality composite materials. All its parts and equipment are manufactured by companies having ISO 9001 certificate on these parts and equipment that confirms quality management and ensures the quality of products (in the Russian Federation ISO 9001 standard corresponds to ГОСТ Р ИСО 9001-2001).

HULL MATERIAL
The hull of hovercraft Christy 453 (4138) is made of composite materials.

Features:
The hull of hovercraft is made of composite materials by contact moulding with a varying thickness to provide maximum durability at minimum weight. Various foam fillers, resistant to mechanical impact and chemicals (oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid etc.), are used to increase stiffness, vibration and sound insulation.
The hull has antiskid coating in places where it is needed.

Energy absorption:
Damage caused by impact of the hull made of composite materials with BASF foam (Germany) leads to local crushing of the core and partial separation of laminate, usually only on hull plating. Even severe damage does not lead to deformation of the structure beyond the damaged area.

Low damageability:
Small breaches do not result in leaking. If only an outer layer is pierced, the foam core will be crushed creating a cushion protecting an inner layer. Moreover, if the outer layer is torn and the panel stiffness in this place is destroyed, the inner layer functions like a flexible membrane easily deflecting when a foreign element penetrates and unbending when the foreign element is removed.
When the structure of the panel is damaged, its repair isn’t usually urgent and can be made later at earliest convenience.
This good design makes it possible to minimize inevitable joints and locate them in non-critical low-stress areas.
Unlike metals the materials used in this design do not suffer from fatigue which eliminates the risk of structural damage caused by unbalance of a running gear or various cyclic loads. This also enhances the energy absorbing qualities of the materials.

HULL MATERIAL

High panel stiffness:
Sandwich structure has thick sections, which provides less requirements for inner hull frame. As a result internal surfaces become cleaner and smoother, thus making additional space and making the cleaning easier.

Repairability:
The damaged Sandwich structures can be easily repaired by semi skilled workers or trained crew. Repair kits may be kept onboard and used in the field regardless of power or other repair facilities.

Corrosion stability:
Corrosion is not a problem for materials used by Christy Hovercraft. The hull plating materials are not corrodible. All water-contacting surfaces are made of Epoxy or Vinylester based resin that is proof against water. All fixture elements, handles and other metal parts are made of stainless steel and other rust-resistant materials. Component materials of the world manufacturers were used in Christy 453hull manufacturing: Alhstrom (Finland), Akzo Nobel, Ashland, DIAB (Швеция), Zyvax (USA), RJ Marshall (USA),Farecla (England), Finish Kare (USA), П-Д Татнефть – Алабуга – Стекловолокно, OCV, ES Manufacturing (USA), PARABEAM (Holland), Spheretex (German).

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION Prevention of environmental pollution:
Prevention of environmental pollution: The hovercraft construction does not have holes through which contaminated water or fuel could leak from the engine compartment into environment. The contaminated water can be pumped out of the engine compartment and cabin into special containers by the bilge pumps and pipelines and then drained into tanks.
The hovercraft hovers over the surface at a height of 30-40 cm. Thus, there is no damage of the surface.
The hovercraft engines comply with the Euro 3 and 4 emission standard.

UNIQUE FEATURES OF CHRISTY 453 (4138):
Separate location of the thrust and lift systems improves the hovercraft balance. A modern German turbocharged engine unit of increased power, with intercooler. High load capacity. Modular design of the hovercraft makes it possible to build hovercrafts of various application and configurations without expensive alteration and easily improve the craft taking into account customer needs. The equipment can be easily replaced; it is available for examination and maintenance in the process of operation.

Thrust and lift engines have their own protective hoods that can be easily opened and provide easy access to any unit of the engine and reliable protection from external impacts. Original power-plant suspension system minimizes vibration and total weight of the craft. Sandwich-type design makes Christy 453 (4138) light and absolutely unsinkable.

A new patented system of air distribution in the cushion is used. Area and volume of the cabin have become the biggest in the class of 4-passenger hovercrafts. Load capacity, amphibious qualities and softness of running have been increased due to a double-level skirt that is also used on big commercial and military hovercrafts. Repair of the skirt is limited to simple replacement of the worn separate segments.

The side windows are made of tempered impact-proof glass, which increases level of safety and improves appearance and performance characteristics of the craft. The car technology of glass installation is being used here (pasting-in).
Vertical and horizontal rudders of the company’s own original design makes the hovercraft more responsive and safe.
The original ventilation and heating system provides comfortable microclimate in the cabin.
